Senior Director, National Technology Strategy

Lewis Shepherd is an R&D executive with VMware, the pioneering Silicon Valley virtualization technology company and the world’s leading private-cloud-computing and multicloud-management provider. As Senior Director of Technology Strategy, reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, he helps shape the research and emerging-technology roadmap for the Palo Alto-headquartered company, including for disruptive prototyping efforts of specific relevance to governments and public sector agencies.
He also currently serves as a senior advisor to the US Department of Defense on AI/Autonomy and other projects, advises multiple other government agencies, and sits on the Federal Communications Commission’s Tech Advisory Council for Emerging Technologies. He is Chair of the Intelligence Committee at the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA), leading its conferences and collaboration with US and allied agencies.
Shepherd’s first federal leadership role was after the 9/11 attacks, when he moved to DC from Silicon Valley to help lead Intelligence Community innovation as Senior Technology Officer at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).
