My research lab at the University of Minnesota is focused on leukocyte biology. A key leukocyte (white blood cell) involved in the early events of inflammation is the neutrophil, the most abundant leukocyte in the blood. Another leukocyte of focus is the natural killer (NK) cell, which plays an important role in killing cancer cells. Various receptors expressed on the surface of these cells and regulatory factors they release are regulated by a process referred to as ectodomain shedding. Among other lines of research, our lab is actively involved in understanding the function and regulation of this proteolytic process in order to enhance tumor cell killing and decrease damaging inflammation.
